Keep Clean While Moving
When it comes to moving, there is plenty to worry about. From packing up your old house to making sure everything is set at the new place, there is a lot of keep track of.
To make things easier on yourself, you’ll want to continue keeping your house clean as you prepare to move. That may seem like a daunting task, but these tips will help make things a bit easier.
But if you want one less thing to worry about, consider contacting Custom Maids to take care of the cleaning for you!
Give yourself plenty of time
Preparing for a move takes a lot of time, so start decluttering at least a month in advance. You’ll want to get rid of old stuff and pack methodically to avoid throwing things in boxes that you don’t need or won’t be able to find again. We recommend starting early and tackling things room by room to keep it manageable.
Get rid of old stuff
The best thing about moving into a new home is being able to leave behind all of the things you don’t use or need. As you begin preparing rooms for packing, you’ll probably discover items that you don’t even remember owning!
Seriously consider whether to keep, sell or donate these items and anything else that you don’t regularly use. Consider Marie Kondo’s tidying up method, and try to keep only things that are meaningful or useful to you.
Clean as you pack
As you are packing each room, clean as you go. After you’ve narrowed it down to the items you plan to keep, pack those away, then begin cleaning from the top of the room down to the floors. This will allow any dust or dirt from the light fixtures, wall hangings, etc., to land on the floor, which can be cleaned at the end.
Start by dusting lights and wood or glass surfaces. Then be sure to clean the windows, window sills and other surfaces that still need cleaning. Finally, vacuum the floor, and make sure to give it a deep clean.
Don’t forget about the kitchen and bathrooms
These two rooms will probably be some of the most important and last used before you move, so be sure to give them a thorough cleaning.
In the kitchen, scrub the cabinets and give all shelves a dusting. Wipe down the counters and empty out any drawers, wiping down the inside once clear. Also, clean the inside and outside of the microwave and wipe any remaining appliances. If you are taking your refrigerator and freezer, be sure to leave a few days to defrost them and clean out the insides.
For the bathroom, clean out any exhaust fans first so any mess they make can be cleaned up later. Then clean the shower, toilet and sink. Dust any shelving, medicine cabinets or drawers. Clean the mirror and any windows. Finally, vacuum, then mop the floor.
Deep clean your new home
As if cleaning your old home wasn’t enough, you’ll want to make sure to deep clean your new home too. Hopefully, the old owners have left it pretty clean, but you’ll still want to scrub each empty room to make sure it is safe for everyone in the home.
From the kitchen and bathrooms to the bedroom and everywhere in between, you’ll want to take the same methodical approach in reverse. Once a room is clean, then unpack and turn your new house into a home.
