How to Stay On Top of Spring Cleaning While You’re Moving

For most of us, spring is a time to get organized after a long holiday season and subsequent winter when things get hectic and, let’s face it, too cold to stay motivated. Now that the warm weather has broken through, it’s time for spring cleaning, but for many, it’s also time to move.

Things get extremely chaotic when packing and preparing for a move, but one way to stay ahead of the disorganization is to do some parts of your spring cleaning before you actually move. That way, when you arrive in your new home, it’s much easier to settle in. Here are some methods of cleaning up while moving out!

Throw Away Your Stuff

Okay, okay, so we’re not saying throw aways all your stuff. What we are saying is that most people have a lot of things they don’t need, don’t use, and often don’t even want.

One way people often alleviate this is by going through all their belongings one room at a time and deciding what to keep, what to sell, and what to donate. Moving offers a convenient window with which to accomplish this.

Since you already have to pack all your things, simply go through them as you do and decide what to keep and what to get rid of.

Give Yourself Time

As soon as you know you’ll be moving, you can start to prepare by organizing and cleaning your belongings. No part of moving feels better than arriving at your new home finally unpacked having left behind everything you don’t need or use.

The more time you can give yourself to accomplish this, the better. Waiting until the last second to move is hard enough, but trying to clean out and organize your stuff days before you go is nearly impossible. Start early, start small, and you can get it done!

Clean Your Old Things

Moving is also a great time to clean old items that get overlooked and neglected over time, especially any appliances you’ll be moving like microwave ovens. Another example is technology like gaming systems or DVD players which often get extremely dusty in media centers.

Whenever you remove your belongings from their homes, simply have a duster or wet wipe nearby and clean it off before packing it up.

Deep Clean Your New Home

This isn’t absolutely necessary and most of the time, your new place will have been cleaned by someone else beforehand, but that doesn’t mean it’s deep cleaned. Moving into a new place when it’s been fully cleaned from top to bottom is an amazing feeling and a great way to start off life in your new home on the right foot.

From wiping down walls and ceilings to cleaning the inside of fridges and ovens, there are a lot of things that get missed in standard cleanings. If you have the time before move-in, you can make life easier later by cleaning these things early.

If you don’t want to go through the trouble, however, you can always hire a cleaning service to make life even less stressful as you go through the moving process.
