Five Common Household Odors and How to Eliminate Them

 1.   Drains and garbage disposals

Drains are notorious for snagging hair, bits of food and other smelly items. These things sitting in your drain attract bacteria and, before long, begin to stink. To omit these smelly odors, clean drains regularly using ¼ cup baking soda to 1 cup of vinegar. Pour the baking soda in first and follow with the vinegar. Rinse well with warm water. You can see our previous blog post for more ways to clean drains.

2.   Pets-we love them, but we don’t always love their smell!

Make sure Fido is bathed and groomed regularly. This will cut down not only on that funky dog smell, but also on the pet hair that likes to settle in every nook and cranny. Keep pet bedding laundered and all litter boxes (baking soda works well here, too!), cages, kennels and food areas cleaned regularly. Fido will appreciate it and you’ll love having that pet smell out for good.

3.   Old cooking smells

That fish sure was good but the fishy odor lingering around the next day isn’t. Make sure all cooking surfaces are thoroughly cleaned immediately following a strong-smelling dinner (garlic, onions, fish, cabbage, etc). Wash dishes and utensils immediately after the meal and take the trash out. Use an all-natural cleanser on surfaces. Open windows, if necessary, to let the breeze naturally clear away any offending odors.

4.   Musty odors

Nobody likes a smelly bathroom! Musty bathroom odors are usually caused by mildew, which thrive in moist environments. Follow your nose and you will likely find mildew growing on shower walls, behind decorations and even on the ceiling. To combat this issue, use the exhaust fan while showering to help alleviate the humidity in the air. Pick up wet towels, as this is a favorite place for mildew to grow. Clean showers, tubs, sinks and toilets regularly with an all-natural cleanser. Baking soda, lemon juice and vinegar make a fabulous cleaner that leaves a nice, fresh scent.

5.   Trash cans

Make sure to take trash out regularly. Clean can with baking soda. Line the bottom with a paper towel and lay a fabric softener sheet on top of it before putting the trash liner in. Try not to discard food items in the trash, as they tend to emit a bad smell rather quickly.  A lidded can will help contain any mild odors.
